    The city named Tunis is the capital of Tunisia. Tunis is located on a cape between two lagoons. La Goulette or Halq-al-Wadi is the port of Tunis is situated at the end of the eastern lagoon named Tunis Lake. The city was established by the Libyans. Later it became a small town under Carthage. But it was started to be important after the Muslim conquest which was occurred in the 7th century. In the early 9th century it was the capital of Abbasid dynasty. During the 13th century it was one of the leading cities of the Muslim world under the rules of Hafsid dynasty.

    During the 16th century Tunis was controlled by the Spanish and the Ottomans. Later it was under the rule of Germans at the time of 1942. Tunisia gained their freedom from France in the year 1956 and Tunis became the capital of the country.

    Textiles, carpets and olive oil are produced in the city as well as it has metallurgical industries. Tourism is also a very important part of its economy. According to the cencus report of 1994 the population was 674,000 of the capital of Tunisia.
