The expression etched on the Korean War Veterans' Memorial reads 'Freedom is not free.' The Korean War Veterans' Memorial is located in Washington, D.C., and is dedicated to the soldiers who served in the Korean War. This memorial was inaugurated in 1995, when the then South Korean President Kim Young Sam was on a state visit to the United States of America. The memorial was inaugurated jointly by the American President Bill Clinton and the South Korean President Kim Young Sam.
The Korean War Veterans' Memorial is opened all round the year, between 8:00 in the morning and 11:45 at night. The only day it is closed is Christmas. This memorial is situated right next to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., and is a popular site. The legislation that authorized construction of the site was passed by Congress in 1986.
The memorial essentially consists of the Field of Service, a triangular area that has 19 statues of soldiers on patrol, a curb done in granite that has the list of all the member countries of the U.N. who supported USA or made any kind of contribution towards the war, 22 in all, the wall, and the Pool of Remembrance. Here is where the etching mentioned above is made.
