    See first of all it has to be made clear that speed is a scalar quantity and velocity a vector that is to describe speed you only need the magnitude but to describe velocity you need to specify magnitude as well as direction Therefore if you say that velocity is 55 then it has to be said that in which direction it is 55 otherwise it will be wrong but if you say speed is 55 then it OK as you only need magnitude.
