This should not happen if area kept clean, but should there be some swelling and discharge, get to a vet

Not anymore than without. Mine gets ear infections a lot. It's part of an allergy, she scratches with dirty feet, bacteria gets in there along with moisture and bingo an ear infection. Then a vet visit some meds and its gone til the next time, usually in summer months. Her ears aren't cropped.
