If you have held the gas valve down for a minute or two after lighting (thermocouple has to get hot) and still goes out when released-need to replace the thermocouple. It is a safety device - small gas line with a inch or two long metal piece right above the pilot light location. Find at Lowes or other hardware store.

If that does not work get a pro!

For that can and might kill you, and don't roll the dice over a gas hot water heater, please!
