There are two concepts about the propagation of light waves. According to classical physics a medium is required for the propagation of light waves. The medium for the light wave is named as ether. Light cannot travel without ether. Light waves are consist of two fields that are magnetic field and electric field. These fields are perpendicular to each other and also perpendicular to the motion of light waves.
Michelson and Morley performed an experiment and explained the motion of light waves. According to Michelson and Morley ether does not exist, so light wave does not require any medium to travel.
