Scheduling work time requires thought, determination and structure. I would suggest creating a priority list: 1) Daily tasks, which must be completed. Arrange the tasks into a priority list, number these as to the importance of each. First things first is rule to follow.

Example: a) Return phone calls according to importance. b) Ask questions you need to ask others to complete today's tasks, (stick to question and answer, skip conversation). c) Check emails and respond ASAP, according to importance,(anything not job related does get read now). d) Deal with work not completed yesterday in order of importance. e) Accept no personal phone calls, which are not from immediate family or an emergency, deal only with the call, no idle conversation. Make no personal phone calls during work, unless it involves a child, parent, spouse. f) Be friendly to other staff people, but hold non-work related conversation to a minimum, outside of legitimate breaks and lunch time. g) Adhere to break and lunch time limits. (Remember those "just a minute more times, add up to wasted time and uncompleted work, at the end of the day.)
    h) arrange things on your desk before leaving in order of importance and begin the next day doing first things first.

Our workplace is our home away from home and just as we want things to be orderly at home we want to things at work to be, in an orderly fashion also. Just by doing simple things, such as those listed above, you will be surprised by the amount of work you get completed in a day. Put your energy into doing things in order of importance. Do not be forced into allowing things to pile up do to inaction.

Save the personal stuff for after work. You actually, will find you are happier, more is accomplished in a day and you do not feel as though you are always behind. I imagine you will find other ways to organize you and your work, so you are the one in control, of your life at work.
