Linux is an operating system similar to Windows or Mac OS. It is not as popular as the two mentioned as it can be quite hard to get programs working on it, though quite a few are supporting Linux too nowadays. Also a lot of people have not heard of it. It is very popular amongst the highly involved computer users. It has one very big advantage over the more established OSs and that is the fact that it is open source. Open source means that anyone with the skill can go into the source code, the internal parts of the program, and change things. This results in a lot of modifications (mods) to the OS being available, these can do anything from simply changing the look, to completely changing the way you browse folders and more. This is also the reason that it is harder to get programs working as there are so many configurations that they cause problems. But being open source, anyone can attempt to replicate and fix problems, so ironically, even though it causes more problems, it is also a lot easier to fix those problems. You can view the linux website to get more information and to download it for free.
