Carbonic acid, (H2CO3), is an unstable acid. It exists in carbon dioxide and water solutions.
Limestone is a commonly found rock of the sedimentary type. It contains mainly of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). It serves commonly as a stone used for building and in the production of lime and cement.
When carbonic acid is added to limestone, it breaks down the calcium and carbon molecules completely, dissolving the limestone.
Even though carbonic acid is not very strong, in the course of time it can dissolve huge amounts of limestone. As acid rain contains carbonic acid, buildings and structures made out of limestone are facing severe deterioration
