The Irish terrier is a breed of dog associated with a strong will and stubbornness. Irish terriers are highly intelligent, but only a relaxed but firm and authoritative person can train them properly. Care must be taken not to get violent or aggressive with Irish terriers, as they tend to disobey and become violent in return. Irish terriers are one of the quickest learners, especially of fairly routine and easy tasks, but their main problem is that they tend to lose interest pretty quickly as well and must be constantly motivated. Enrolling an Irish terrier in an obedience class is the best and most professional way to get the dog trained. It is here that they will naturally blossom into fine pets, as they will be trained to be at their best behaviour all the time. Irish terriers enjoy physical activities and love to be regularly stimulated mentally as well.

Irish Terriers are one of the most intelligent breed of dogs around.
My Irish Terrier was an amazing animal in all ways and when he died at an advanced age I was devastated.
However they are a very strong willed and single minded breed and training can be difficult. They are rather wild and want to do their own thing.
training classes are a good idea as attempting to change bad habits can be daunting.
Irish Terriers aren't always very friendly towards other dogs and this can be a problem so socialisation is important from an early age.
They are extremely loyal and loving animals but this doesn't stop them from being very disobedient if they choose to be.
It never works if you are heavy handed with them as they only respond to kindness as does any other dog.
They need plenty of exercise and enjoy a long walk but do take care when they are off the lead as they do have a habit of trying to run off as they forget themselves once off a lead.
I would recommend an Irish terrier to anyone who loves a feisty dog and has a lot of time, energy and patience to spare. Lovely dogs despite all their naughty traits!
