The USA and China have historically been "suspicious" of each other because China is a Communist nation and the USA is a democracy. For many years, before the 1970's, the USA and China had little to do with each other because of the differences in their forms of government. It was President Richard Nixon's formal visit to China that "opened up the mysterious East" to America. For the first time in almost 100 years, the leaders of a Communist and a Democratic government sat down together. President Nixon's historic visit to China helped to decrease the suspicion between the USA and China. China has never been aggressive towards America in a military sense. America does have "open doors" in trade; we import and export goods made in China. When China received "most favored nation" status in America, many citizens were opposed to this; it meant that China was one of our major import and export trades. The opposition to this was that we should not give this status to a Communist nation. In America, we continue to have a friendly relationship with China.
