The Channel tunnel took seven years to be completed. Work began on both the English and French shores on the 1st of December 1987 and it was officially opened by the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II and the then French President Francois Mitterrand on the sixth of May 1994.

The Channel Tunnel is a rail tunnel approximately thirty one miles long (that is 50.5km). It runs underneath the English Channel and the Dover Straits. It serves as a link between Folkestone in Kent, England to Coquelles which is in northern France near Calais. The proposal for the construction of this highly useful but expensive project has been around for a long time, in fact the first official proposal dates back to 1802. The Channel tunnel was nicknamed the Chunnel.
