After the discovery of America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, many European nations viewed the Americas as definite lands of opportunity for consolidating power and accumulating wealth.
It was Spain who holds the honor of being the first nation to ever build an empire in the continents of North America and South America. Their reason for entering the newly discovered world was attributed to the prospect of spreading Christianity amongst the natives of the land (Native Americans), to explore more treasures of gold and to strengthen the status of Spain in the European world.
These men who were responsible for Spain's conquest of American were brave, nevertheless they were cruel and were referred to as conquistadors. There were many prominent conquistadors who conquered various regions for Spain, which included Hernan Cortes (who conquered the land of Mexico for Spain) and Francisco Pizarro.
