    The Pacific Ocean literally covers over an incredible third of our massive planet's surface, holding more than 50 per cent of its water. This massive body is celebrated as the largest of our globe's oceans. Its area is roughly 165 million square kilometres (that is, around 64 million square miles). The Pacific Ocean in effect comes from the Latin name Mare Pacificum, translating as "peaceful sea", which was given to the ocean by the Ferdinand Magellan, a legendary Portuguese explorer

    Thus, it's much larger than what would be the actual land area of our planet and a little under 18 times the total size of the entire United States. This wondrous ocean has a total depth of 4,270 meters (that is, 14,000 ft) on average. It is also renowned as being home to the celebrated the Mariana Trench off Guam, which is in effect the deepest known point observed in the ocean.
