What Is A Drawing Room?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the drawing room would refer to the room in a house where visitors were entertained, sometimes also called a parlour. This would be the most ornate and lavishly decorated room in the house.

The term is short for 'withdrawing' room as the room would have been one where the host and privileged guests would withdraw for more intimate conversation. The term is much less used now, only in houses where there are three or four reception rooms.
