The Bauldier kids are taken to their late father's distant cousin's wife's brother's house. His name is Montgomery and is a reptile lover. His house has several snakes they are tamed including the Deadly Viper. Now Monty is planning an expedition to Peru along with the kids.
The kids take an immediate liking to Monty and help him with his work and play with the snakes. However one day his secretary resigns and sends a replacement Stephano. Who is the evil Count Olaf that is after the children's wealth. He threatens the children and stops every effort of the children trying to rattle on him. But Monty realizes that something is wrong and fires Stephano.
The next morning the children find Monty dead in the reptile room and Mr. Poe is called. They claim that Count Olaf has killed him but Poe does not believe them. Then he calls in Dr. O. Lucafont to examine the dead body. But again it is the count who has disguised himself as the Doctor.But finally the kids out smart Count Olaf and unmask his disguise.
