Do You REALLY Have An Equal Chance Of Winning If You Choose The "no Purchase Necessary" Option On Competitions That Should Require A Purchase?

On many products that run competitions, they very often provide a "no purchase necessary" (NPN) option which offers exactly the same chance of winning as an entry with proof of purchase. The promoter is obliged to offer this entry route as otherwise their competition could be deemed to be a 'lottery' which is illegal unless officially set up under gambling regulations. The competition or prize draw would be considered a lottery if it meets three criteria; 1) it offers a prize, 2) winning is determined by chance, so there is no skill involved, 3) something of value, such as a purchase flows from the entrant to the promoter. If all three conditions are met then the draw is seen to be illegal and that is why the "no purchase necessary" option is offered. Yes, you have an equal chance of winning and yes, people win via this route on a regular basis. Just recently someone won a £10,000 Moben kitchen with a NPN postcard entry.
