An Intrusion detection system is a software or hardware which performs the function of detecting any attempts made for accessing, disabling or manipulating the computer systems in any way. This is mainly done through networks and Internet as well.

The strengths of an Intrusion detection system (IDS) are that they can be placed in strategic locations and they can also detect any packet filtering taking place. They provide Real time Detection and they do not let the attacker to remove the evidence of any activates that he did on the system. The Intrusion Detection systems are Operating system independent.

Some of the weaknesses are they might not work to full efficiency when the network is busy. They do not monitor encrypted traffic very well.
