Where Is Cathedral In Mexico City?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The cathedral is located on Mexico City's Zocalo Square. After wipeing out the Aztec temples, Cortes gave out orders for the construction of a church on the same location. In the year 1573 the church was broken down and work was started to build a cathedral, which was planned to be similar to Toledo and Granada.

It was consecrated, still incomplete, in the year 1667 and the finishing touches- the two bell towers and a central dome were planned and constructed by Manuel Tolsa in the year 1813. The neighboring Sagrario, parish church for the area, was constructed from the local red tezontle stone during the 1700s and is equally impressive with its Churringueresque façade.  The cathedral had the privilege of using new architectural styles that went on to become extremely famous in New Spain.
