What Are Denial Of Service Attacks ?

In a Denial of Services (DoS) attack, the most affected element is a web server; the attacker sends a stream of requests to a service on the server machine in the hope of exhausting all the resources like memory or consuming processor capacity and power of processing. Instead of paralyzing network operations by formula that put system to halt, attacks launch DoS attacks that silently degrade service over long periods of time to eat up a large amount of system resources and bandwidth.

In a Distributed Dos (DDoS) attack, hacker install an agent on numerous hosts, the hacker sends a command to the master, which resides in any of the many host .the master communicates with host agent residing in other server to communicate the attack. DDoS attacks are considerable harder to combat because blocking a single IP address or network will not stop them, the traffic can derive from hundred or even thousands of individual systems, and sometimes the users are not even aware that their computers are part of attack.

DoS attacks involve: jamming networks, flooding mails, flooding service ports, mis-configuring routers or other critical devices. Some types of attacks are Port scanning attack, Smurf attack, SYN flooding attack, ping flooding attack.
