Faeries fly because they are very tiny, nearly invisible, and shouldn't get underfoot. It could be very dangerous for them. They have to fly to get to where they sleep at night (usually on leaves, or in flower petals, where they also bathe in dewdrops) Your personal faerie must be able to fly to keep up with you...sit on your shoulder, etc. They fly to get from one place to another very quickly. There are good, bad, and helpful faeries. Originally they were thought to be the souls of the departed, and today they are viewed in many Wicca/Witchcraft Traditions as spiritual beings whose actions maintain the life force in Nature. The earliest origins for the stereotypical image of the faerie in Western culture appear in ancient Mediterranean art. Tomb paintings of tiny winged beings were found in Etruscan art as early as 600 B.C.
"The Faerie Tradition" is a Wiccan system founded by Victor Anderson and Gwydion Pendderwen. "The Faerie Tradition" is very secretive and little is known about their beliefs and practices.
Have you ever seen a "Faerie Ring" around the sun or the moon? It looks like a large, complete circle, and always indicates a change in the weather is approaching. It has the colors of the rainbow, although usually only two or three are noticed.
More than you asked, but what a great question. I actually have a picture of a little girl I took with my digital camera, and the speed of the faerie's wings, and my shutter speed must have meshed perfectly because I caught a picture of one of her faeries...a perfect circle, white, with slightly rough edges and a brilliant white brightness in the center of the circle.. One of my most prized possessions.

They love the feel of the air. They fly because they cannot walk so quickly, they fly to get away from uncertain objects.
