What Breed Is My Dog?
Long black coat, curled tail, long nose, large bump on back of head similar to the type found on retrievers, long legs and goes on point when playing.

A picture would be worth a thousand words. Spaniels (Brittany, Springer) are the breeds most associated with pointing, Labrador's are black coated. Post a pic and you'll get more and better guesses.

Sounds most like a flat-coated retriever to me. Go on the Kennel Club site and compare him with the pictures.
That lump on his head is called the occiput.
