The personality of an individual depends upon the balance between the sources of anxiety in his life and the defenses he uses against them.

Mental disorder occurs when the defensive structure of the individual is not sufficient to restrain the anxiety.

A large number of factors contribute to anxiety in the life of a person. Some of the important ones are as follows:

    INTERNAL CONFLICTS
The internal conflicts result from two types of factors:
    1. Physiological Factors
These are responsible for anxiety as the individual passes through various physiological periods in his or her life such as, adolescence, pregnancy, etc.
    2. Psychological Factors
These factors are responsible for anxiety originating within the personality as the individual struggles against the realities of the outside world.

    EXTERNAL CONFLICTS
During the course of life, every individual has to face different situations which result in anxiety:
The problems he faces in his day to day life, frustrations, disappointments, over stimulations.

    EMOTIONAL STORMS
An individual may have to face emotional storms due to gross stress. Some examples are as follows:
A serious physical illness, loss of job, loss of a close relative, failure to succeed, loss of a precious possession, loss of a serious argument.
