Why Does Pluto Take So Long To Orbit?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Since Pluto has such a large orbit, it takes longer for it to get around. Here is an experiment you can do in your backyard that will demonstrate what I am talking about. Tie a tennis ball to a long rope or string. First, hold the rope to where there is not much distance between you and the ball. If you swing it around and around, you will notice that it will make more revolutions in a period of time than it would if it were farther away. Then try swinging it around while holding the rope with a lot of distance between you and the ball. If the ball travels at the same speed that it were going when it was close to you, then it will take longer for it to go around.

It is so far away its orbit is much larger than that of earth or any other inner planet.
