Travertine is supposed to be sealed, and I assume it isn't sealed very well if you are getting stains. Acids could destroy it , it is a natural stone and like marble acid can do some bad damage to it. You need to remove the sealer that is left on it. Have it steamed cleaned and resealed. The steaming will more than likely remove the stain , if it doesn't it may be damaged and need to be grinded down or rebuffed. I would reseal it anyway and hope for the best. Talk to a stone layer who deals with marbles . If he is good, he will have the machines to rebuff your stone or polish it down , that will remove the damaged part and then reseal it.Do a search for travertine sealer, or marble sealers. You should find more information there.
