What Do They Do In The Crop Over Carnival In Barbados?

Answer Question

The Crop Over festival is held in Barbados over a period of five weeks during the summer. This festival is easily the biggest festival in Barbados, and anyone who visits Barbados knows about the Crop Over festival.

So what is the Crop Over festival? The festival as it exists today is not obviously what it started out as in the beginning. The festival was originally held as a celebration to mark the completion of sugar harvesting. The first time the festival was hed was way back towards the end of the 18th century, some time in the 1870s. As you can see, the name Crop Over is a direct reference to the end of the crop season.

The festival went out of fashion briefly in between, and was shut down totally towards the middle of the 20th century, sometime during the 1940s. The revival came about in 1974, when the festival was restarted, but with a slight difference. The festival became a celebration of the different aspects that made Barbados, as against just a celebration of the end of the sugar harvest.

The beautiful Barbados not only springs to life each year in the month of July, but also gives tourists and the locals something to remember the year through. Highlighting the already vibrant lifestyle of the Barbadians, the crop over carnival is just another excuse for celebration. It is a festival that has a rich history and culture and is unique to the land. The crop over festival and carnival basically rings in the local sugarcane crop harvest. The activity of the laborious Barbadians ends in this fantastic and spectacular five week long celebration.

The spectacle of the floats and costumes is a feast for the eyes. Locally brewed beer and rum replaces water or any other drink through the period. Some of the carnival highlights include:
      - Ceremonial delivery of the last canes.
      - Crowning of a King and Queen of the carnival.
      - Cart parades and floats.
      - Weekly Calypso tent shows.
      - The Calypso Monarch competition.
      - The Bridgetown market flaunting the local arts and crafts.

The locals and tourists indulge wholeheartedly in the celebrations. In fact, July and August are 'the' months to visit Barbados. The loud and lively soca music is unique and has everyone, man, lady, boy and girl, dancing to the distinct beats. The crop over carnival in Barbados is in fact 'Carnival Barbados', a celebration, spotlighting the people and land.
