My Four Month Puppy Has A Skin Infection, And Antibiotics Haven't Helped. What Else Can I Do?

The vet said it was a skin infection that was not contagious, but now both my four month old puppies have spots where the hair fell out. Can I buy more antibiotics without a prescription? Is this the best thing to do?

No you cannot buy antibiotics without a prescription.  It is not the best thing to restart antibiotics when they had no effect prior.  Mites are a very common cause of hair loss and itching in young dogs.  Demodex is the most common type of mites.  These mites are common in young puppies because their immune system is not fully developed.  These mites are commonly found in very small populations in dogs and with the decreased immune function they overgrow.
This dog needs to be examined by a veterinarian and have a skin scrape performed to test for mites.  Ringworm is another dermatological disease that affects puppies.  A fungal culture can be performed to determine if ringworm is the problem.

It sounds like hot spots and you can give benadryl to them and call the vet for dosage as it differs. They may need to be seen if this continues for a cortizone shot. You can try hydrocordizone cream on the spot. That is what the vet told me to do!! Best of luck to you!!!
