    Denzel Washington won the category of 'Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role' in the 74th Academy Awards, held in 2002. This was for playing the part of Alonzo Harris in 'Training Day'.

    Fellow nominees for the award included Russell Crowe in 'A Beautiful Mind', Sean Penn in 'I am Sam', Will Smith in 'Ali' and Tom Wilkinson in 'In the Bedroom'.

    Denzel Washington used his acceptance speech to pay tribute to Sidney Poitier and stated that he would always be trying to follow in Poitier's footsteps.
    He also thanked the Academy as well as his wife, children and fellow actors including Ethan Hawke who he described as his 'partner in crime'.

    'Training Day' follows the story of corrupt LAPD detective and narcotics officer, Alonzo Harris, played by Washington, give training to new officer Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke. The film raises ethical issues on the policing system within Los Angeles.
