Kitchener's Island is a small island in the middle of the River Nile near Aswan in Egypt. It is also known as the island of plants.
The island is covered by lush botanical gardens that contain many unusual and exotic plant species from within Egypt and from many other parts of the world. The plants were brought there by the British general Horatio Kitchener, who was presented with the island in the 1890s for his role in the Egyptian army's successful campaigns in Sudan.
He decided to live on the island and created a magnificent garden with beautiful flowers and exotic plants brought from all over the world.
The middle of the island is dominated by huge sycamore trees, coconut and date palms and other plants that attract colourful birds and egrets.
The island is now a tourist attraction and can be visited for a small fee. It can be reached on a felucca, a traditional Egyptian sail boat.
