Who Owns Trojan Records?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Trojan Records (British Record label) was purchased by Sanctuary Records in 2001for £10.3 million. In 2003, RAS and Creole (Reggae-based companies) joined the Sanctuary fold.

Trojan Records was founded in 1968 to serve as a sister label for Island Records. Among other styles, they specialized in Rocksteady and Reggae. However it was not all smooth sailing. The UK experienced a decline in the interest in Jamaican music and at this crucial time, Island Records terminated its partnership. As their profits dwindled they were forced to sell out in 1974, to the Saga Company. However far from elevating it, 1982 saw Trojan Records settling into inactivity.

It was revived in 1985 by Colin Newman who did not have sufficient knowledge of reggae but hired many experts who did. By the early 1990s, Trojan had started pulling out of its doldrums.  After 25 long years, they were compiling and re-issuing reggae recordings. They were then purchased by the Sanctuary Records Group and have been growing constantly ever since.
