Working with electricity can be an extremely dangerous job, thus when a person thinks of opting for the career of an electrician, he should be prepared for the circumstances and educate himself in how to protect from these hazards.

It is important to switch off any appliance, power tool or equipment while you are working on it, if it starts sparking. It should be unplugged immediately and use a wooden stick to turn take off the plug if you are not sure about it, in order to avoid any dangers.

Always remember to switch of the main distribution board before working on an electrical circuit. It would be a good idea to put a sign board on the main system that work is being done at the moment, so that no other person comes and switches it back on.
With out testing a certain thing do not assume it is earthed and this can be done by using a voltage tester, which will make sure the power is off.

This device can also be used to locate live wires. If you have any doubts about a wire being a conductor or not, then just assume it is, to be on the safe side. Conductors allow electricity to pass through and any metal, wire or aluminum can be a conductor. Since human beings are made up of mostly water, you should be careful not to touch any conductor while working with electricity.

Carefully select the tools you will use to do the electrical work because some can be conductors too and never use a kitchen knife for electrical work. Tools should be carefully handled otherwise they can even injure you.
