Compare And Contrast The Manner And Behavior Of The Liftman And The Bus Conductor.
According to the writer the young liftman and his passenger both stand for bad manners but the liftman is the worse of the two. He did not tolerate the harsh tone of the passenger and threw him out of the lift. Now, incivility is highly undesirable but it is not a legal offense. It cannot be punished. But it induces rudeness and violence in others which is punishable. The liftman was fined for his offense. He could have grained moral and spiritual victory by showing more politeness as did Chesterfield who gave way to a rogue on the road.
The bus conductor is a symbol of courtesy and good manners. He treated his passengers with good humored politeness. He gave a ticket to the writer when he had no money with him. When he trampled on the foot of the writer, he expressed his sorrow in suitable terms. He was as considerate with old people as a son. He was very affectionate to the children. If there was a blind man on the bus, he would help him across the road or safely on his way. He was very patient and kind. He made his passengers comfortable by his cheerfulness.
The writer found warm pleasure in his company. He felt that the good-natured conductor radiated an atmosphere of good temper and kindliness. He comments that a journey with him was a lesson in natural courtesy and good manners. It was always fine weather on his bus. His polite behavior and speech also made his passengers gay and light-hearted. Now the difference between the bus conductor and the liftman was only of saying "please".
