The procedure is normally that. The inspector may come form the insurance company to examine and photograph the damage, (this is to avoid tall stories by the owner who may have reversed into a pole, and not been knocked by someone else). You have to get three quotes from different panelbeaters. Then the insurance company normally requires you to accept the least expensive quote, and since you often have to pay a portion of the excess, it is in your interest to make sure you don't get overcharged.

Then when the work is done you examine it and accept what has been done, or tell them you are not satisfied and ask them to redo it. If you accept what they have done, you sign on the dotted line absolving them of any future claim, and you drive off.

Then next time you get a statement from your insurance agent, you will see your rating has changed, you have now made a claim.
