Who Was The First Player To Miss A Penalty Kick In An FA Cup Final?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The first player to miss a penalty kick in an FA Cup final was John Aldridge who played for Liverpool in the nineteen ninety eight FA Cup final.

Liverpool went into the final against Wimbledon as white hot favourites, and as league champions.  Victory against Wimbledon would have clinched Liverpool an unprecedented second league and cup double in as many seasons.

But the FA Cup has a history of favouring the underdog.  From kick off it was never going to be Liverpool's day.  With Wimbledon midfielder turned actor Vinnie Jones, doing an excellent job of preventing the Liverpool midfield, in particular Steve McMahon from getting in the game.

When Laurie Sanchez scored in the first half, the result was never really in doubt.  Liverpool were awarded a generous penalty in the second half which John Aldridge, the regular Liverpool penalty taker took, but Dave Beasent dived well to his left and saved, handing Wimbledon their one and only FA Cup victory.
