What Is A `banister`?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A banister basically is a setup in stairways to offer guidance. They are created with the basic idea of being grasped with the hand while ascending and descending the stairs.

The expression banister is often misunderstood, as a banister is not the proper name for the handrail applied to guide an individual down a set of stairs. The handrails are usually held up by 'baluster', and the proper name for a handrail is a balustrade. The term banister was derived from the term baluster, as people have mixed up the name.

Generally, handrails also serve as amusement for skiers, snowboarders and other extreme sport participants. Most of the building, handrails are positioned at a height of 34 inches and normally have dimensional limitations concerning graspability.
