What Was Wrong With The Production And Performances Of This Piece Of Earth By Richard Dormer?

Answer Question

I went to see the play called This Piece of Earth by playwright/actor Richard Dormer at the OMAC in Belfast.  Right from the beginning, the set did no favours for the show.  Although the set itself was very well made, and evocative of the mood and atmosphere required of such an ending, it telegraphed the ending.   A stone circle of peat with an entrance up stage right, but no exit, tells the audience that they aren't going to make it to the boat that they are trying to reach.  The playing of 'hungry' acting, the shaking, the heavy breathing and the shallowly used Irish language all detracted from the performance as a whole.  The sound effect of the crow was also cringingly bad.  It was like Beckett had been summoned but had left the play immediately and they had staged what remained.
The direction was also remiss as the actors performances were her responsibility and their use of the stage was minimal, making the slow migration from up right to down left.  The use of the priest at the end was negligible on the part of the playwright.
