The Camp David summit which President Bill Clinton helped bring about was unsuccessful. But an agreement on the basis of future negotiations was reached. The two sides decided that their ultimate aim was to achieve a lasting and just peace.

The two sides also agreed that agreement could only be reached in an atmosphere free of violence, threats and intimidation in any way and that an agreement could only be reached based on resolutions 242 and 338 of the UN Security Council. Unilateral action by either side would not be beneficial to either. Permanent settlement issues should be agreed upon as soon as possible and they agreed that the United States was their partner in all their negotiations.

Unfortunately this was the only positive outcome of the talks. Relations deteriorated on both sides. Now the chairman and icon of the Palestinian freedom struggle and impotence, Yasser Arafat is no more. The HAMMAS has come to power and the politics of Sharon are believed effective in Israel. Worst of all the President of the United States is currently the great George Bush Jr.
