Nicole Kidman won the category of 'Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role' in the 75th Academy Awards, held in 2003. This was playing the part of Virginia Woolf in 'The Hours'.

Fellow nominees for the award included Salma Hayek in 'Frida', Diane Lane in 'Unfaithful', Julianne Moore in 'Far From Heaven' and Renee Zellweger in 'Chicago'.

Kidman gave a weepy acceptance speech, even though fellow actor Russell Crowe had advised her to battle against the tears. She also backed the decision her fellow actors to continue to go to Academy Award ceremonies at a time when terrorists had recently attacked America, leading to the war in the Middle-East. She stated simply that 'art is important'.

'The Hours' is a film featuring the lives of three women, each of them suffering from depression. The storyline follows the author Virginia Woolf writing the book 'Mrs Dalloway', which has an enormous affect on the lives of the other two female characters Laura Brown and Clarissa Vaughn.
