    Born in Maidstone, Kent in July nineteen sixty three, Andrew David Townsend made seventy appearances for the Irish national side in an international career that lasted eight years and included seven international goals.  

    Townsend was part of the Ireland squad that played in their countries first world cup; in Italia nineteen ninety, he represented them again in the world cup of nineteen ninety four, with the tournament held in the United States.  

    Townsend began his professional career with Southampton and he went on to play eighty three league games for the club, scoring five goals.  He moved to Norwich City in nineteen eighty eight and went on to play for the Carrow Road side for two years, scoring eight league goals in seventy one league games.  

    Stamford Bridge and Chelsea were his next destination and Townsend spent three years with the club in the early nineties before his journeyman career took him to Aston Villa, Middlesborough and finally West Brom before he retired in two thousand.
