Yes they figure out what we are saying only if they are pets. Pets who live with humans from 2 to 3+ years came to know human gestures and their voices. Dog is a very intelligent pet you can train it as you want to. They can even pick your shoes and can place them on their place. Can get a things for you like coat if you ask for it.

As far as cats are concern they are not as intelligent as dogs are but they can understand their owners feeling and emotion. They are very loving and don't want to leave their owner for a single minute. If you are crying then they sit beside you and morn, as if asking whats wrong. If you are happy then they might play with you. If they have done something wrong and you shout at them then they make out that it is their fault. Next time they wont do that again.

In short all pets can get use to their surrounding and can even start understanding the language which people speak around them.

Dogs definately know what you are saying most of the time, they have learned by your tone of voice and any gestures.   Cats are not nearly as smart and most of the time don't have a clue.
