Heel spurs form when the long plantar fascia becomes "strained" and pulls a little away from its attachment at the heel.  The resulting "gap" behind the membrane turns to new bone.  These strains are more common in feet that roll inwards, called pronation.  Sometimes inaccurately called "flat feet".  Therefore the best trainers to choose would be those with in-built anti-pronation in the design of the sole and footbed.  Quite a few manufacturers produce these- go to a good sports shop and ask.
