What Are The Handles For On The Rear Crossmember Of A Series Land Rover?
Good question, there are lots of theories about this. One purpose for which these handles are clearly not designed is as a rear bumper, not that you need one.
Here are some of the suggested uses/purposes Land Rover owners have proposed for the rear handles. Whether any of them is the right answer is open to debate. Perhaps the only concrete conclusion is that these handles are multi-purpose and include:
* standing on to wash the rear section of the hard top roof (though they are fitted as standard on truck cabs and soft tops)
* dragging yourself out from underneath when working at the rear of the vehicle
* a lashing point for ropes
* somewhere to tie your dog to when parked
* standing on to check the rear suspension (unlikely with leaf springs)
* a mug holder for picnics etc. (don't think so)
* a place to tie up the mud flaps when going offroad.
