What Is A Reed?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A reed is a thin narrow piece of material which vibrates to make a sound on a musical instrument. There are naturally available reeds as well as synthetic reeds. Usually reeds are created from cane, while the synthetic ones are formed from several materials used by saxophonists and clarinettists.

Compared to the natural reeds, synthetic reeds are more durable. Further synthetic reeds need not be moistened before playing and they are quite consistent in terms of quality.  Reeds are refuted for having a poor sound, and musicians choose to use them only in situations where tone quality is not so importance, for instance, in a marching band. Synthetically made reeds especially those made from polymer compounds have a higher amount of acceptance among musicians.
