Art museums have long been a great gift to the public. Often, they cost little or no money to enjoy. Thus, people from all backgrounds can take part. Also, art museums have great historical value. They are a visual recording of history. The Greek and Roman antiquities section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is an example of this. Another reason that art museums are of value is that they help people to expand their minds. Visitors are able to learn much about other cultures - an experience which they might not have encountered in their every day lives. Art museums can also provide terrific inspiration for young art students. You need only look at the numerous 'sketchers' that fill the halls of great art museums to realize this. Not to be overlooked, art museums are a source of enjoyment and an uplifting pastime in many people's lives.
