You cannot dry out a leg cast - it just turns to mush.

Hospitals recommend that casts are kept dry, but with a leg cast that may not always be possible. However, you should strive to keep it as dry as humanly possible. Water-proof bags that encase a cast can be purchased at your own expense. Generally, these are not supplied as standard at Accident and Emergency (ER).

The only course of action is to return to hospital and ask for another cast to be put on your leg. Don't expect a warm reception, though, as getting a cast wet is avoidable.

Depending on how long your cast has been on already, they may decide just to leave it off. You may also been sent for another X-ray to see how the bone is healing before it they decide to replace the cast.
