Heavy Metal is a form of music characterised by pounding beats and a strong electric guitar sound. Its early exponents hailed mostly from the UK and included Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. In most heavy metal groups, the role of the lead guitarist is paramount among the musicians; almost every song features a lead guitar solo and, in live performances, this can often be extended.

A distinctive subculture grew up around the music. Its features include the wearing of dark clothing especially black leather, often with metal studs, growing hair long, and the general projection of a tough, macho image.

In the 1980s heavy metal began to diversify into a number of distinct sub-genres which include Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Black Metal, and Nu Metal.

Chart success has been elusive for most heavy metal bands but, now and then, one has been able to break through into the mainstream and enjoy mass popularity and its associated record sales.
