    Can Cats Have Epilepsy?

Yes cats do get epilepsy, although compared to dogs, it is quite a rare condition in cats. It can be treated using phenobarbitone (a sedative) and the cat can continue to enjoy a full and happy life.
Occasionally cats develop epilepsy as a result of a brain tumour, however, it can also be attributable to kidney disease, or simply being very old.
Treating a cat who has had an epileptic seizure is very similar to treating a human epileptic. Try to keep calm, move away any objects against which it may bang its head and after the seizure, dim the lights and if the TV is on, turn it off. After the cat comes round, it may be very thirsty and hungry, this is usually indicative of a seizure, so ensure it has food and water nearby.
It is important however, to get proper veterinary advice about how to manage the condition and ensure its quality of life is maintained.
