Many prisoners were evacuated to prisons outside of the vulnerable zone prior to the storm surge. Orleans Parish Prison was not completely evacuated, but there are only four documented escapes, and no deaths.
Apparently, the prison took anywhere from six to ten feet of water; inmates were moved to higher floors. All inmates remaining were evacuated in the first three days following the storm surge. No inmates of Orleans Parish, from the Community Correctional Center, or from the greyhound station that was turned into a temporary jail perished as a result of Katrina, nor did any of the 900 employees who worked during the crisis.
