Hanukkah is a traditional Jewish festival which takes place in December. It was dervived from an episode in Jewish history, about 2,000 years ago where the Jews defeated their enemies, the Syrians and drove them out of the temple in Jerusalem.
The Jews wished to thank God for this victory by lighting holy lamps.
However, they did not have sufficient oil to sustain the lamps, having only one pot of oil.
Miraculously the oil kept the lamps burning for 8 days.
To celebrate this miracle, it was declared to be the Festival of Light and leaders decided it should be celebrated every year.
In modern times, Hannukah is celebrated by the lighting of the menorah. This is a special nine branch candlestick which is symbolic of the Jewish faith. It contains eight candles and one candle per day is lit to celebrate and give thanks for the miracle which kept the lamps alight for eight days.
