The Empire State building was built by a company created specifically for the purpose called Empire Incorporated. Among its founders were some of America's leading industrialists including John Jakob Raskob, who founded General Motors, and Pierre S. du Pont. Albert E. Smith, a former Governor of New York state, was named chief of the corporation.
The building was designed by William Lamb of the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb & Harmon. Construction work began on March 17, 1930 and the building was officially opened by President Franklin Roosevelt on March 31, 1931.
At the time, it was the world's tallest building and remained so for 41 years until the construction, also in New York, of the World Trade Centre. Several buildings around the world have now surpassed it in height, but it remains the second tallest building in the United States, after the Sears Tower.
